PRICE = $75

Fudo Myo-o (Fudo Myou-ou); Japanese reading based on Chinese characters
Jp. = Fudō Myō-ō 不動明王, Ch. = Bùdòng Míngwáng
Jp. = Shō Kannon" 聖観音 (or 正観音), Ch. = Guānyīn
Lovely praying-hand design that folds open to reveal two deities inside. Intricately carved and finely balanced.

  • Wood = Boxwood (Jp. = Tsuge)
  • Inches = 3.35 (H) x 4.13 (W) x 1.97 (D)
  • Centimeters = 8.5 (H) x 10.5 (W) x 5.0 (D)
  • Fudo is Dainichi's wrathful emanation; Fudo (Sanskrit = Acala-Vidyaraja) represents Dainichi's wrath against evil and ignorance; furious, glaring face, as Fudo seeks to frighten people into accepting the Buddhist teachings.
  • Fudo wields the "kurikara" (devil-subduing) sword in right hand (also symbolizes wisdom cutting through ignorance); holds lasso in left (to catch and bind up the wicked); seated on a rock because Fudo's faith is "immovable" See Fudo background notes for more details on iconography.
  • Sho-Kannon (Sanskrit = Arya Avalokitêśvara) seated on lotus and holding a lotus pedal, a symbol of purity. In traditional Japanese Buddhist art and sculpture, the "Shō Kannon" represents the unchangeable form of the deity -- the "pure and sacred" form -- while the deity's many other manifestations are commonly referred to as the 33 Keshin (incarnations). Shō comes from the Sanskrit "Arya," meaning holy. More details on Kannon page
