Senju Kannon (1000-Armed Kannon) is one of the many forms of the Kannon Bodhisattva (Goddess of Mercy), who is one of Japan's most beloved divinities; this carving shows him/her standing on a lotus petal, with central hands in the Mudra of Veneration (Prayer, Aspiration); right arm holding a pilgrim's staff and left grasping a Vajra club; the latter represents the indestructibility of Buddhist law and its power to vanquish evil; for more details, see the Kannon Top page
