Beachwood Tathagata Statue from Thailand

This modern and splendid wood carving was discovered in Japan, but carved in Southeast Asia, probably Thailand. It depicts a Buddha (or perhaps a Bodhisattva) with a stern yet chaming face and a protruding belly. Hands not in a normal mudra position. Made entirely from one piece of drift wood.

  • Wood = Driftwood from beach
  • Inches = H 6.5 x W 3.54 x D 1.97
  • Centimeters = H 16.5 x W 9.0 x D 5.0
  • Identity Unknown. Could be either a Buddha or Bodhisattva. Bodhisattva share only one of the many attributes common to Buddha statues, the elongated earlobes. Thus we might guess this statue to be a Bodhisattva rather than a Buddha. However, Bodhisattva are normally depicted with princely clothes and jewelry. This piece might be Jizo, who alone among the Bodhisattva is generally portrayed unadored and wearing a simple monk's robe
